The Eurocamp experience 2019
We are a family of three. Myself (Richard), Amanda & Thomas.

Like most people, we work really hard through the year and look forward to spending time as a family on holiday. It is an expense to do so therefore you want to make sure you make the right choice so that it can be as special as you want it to be.

In the early part of 2019, I booked what was to be the second leg of our holiday through Eurocamp, for August. The first leg of our holiday was being spent with friends in the Bergerac region of France. We thought we would then have a few days away, as a family, near the beach. Having enjoyed Eurocamp holidays as a child, I thought we would have been safe in our choice. Looking at the Eurocamp website, we found Le Mediterranee Plage on the south coast of France, and summarily booked it for August. After finishing in Bergerac, we drove almost 5 hours to get to Le Mediterranee Plage.

When we arrived, we were shown to our 'dwelling', and immediately Amanda & Tom broke down and cried. The sight was appalling. It couldn't have been further from the images portrayed on their website. The size was not the issue as we selected one that was right for the three of us. Everything was made of plastic; floors, walls, units, couch and even the curtains. The bathroom had some sort of blue bleach-type liquid strewn everywhere, the grout/sealant was poor, shabby and dirty and the mirror had rotted at the bottom. In addition, when seated on the toilet with the window open, you can see (and be seen) by all passers-by as it was right next to the main road entrance to the site.

That being enough for a complaint in itself, was not the worst of it. The unit was so close to the one next door that you could touch it from the decking of our own unit, so totally overlooked. The sunlounger area for the unit was covered in the dried, fallen needles from the tree above (the tree blocking out the sun). The sunloungers were filthy and covered with bird excrement, and had weeds growing through them. And this was situated right next to the building site-style fencing separating us from the main entrance road, which provided no privacy whatsoever. There was no sun in the sunlounger area and you could not plausibly walk to the sunloungers in bare feet as would be too painful, no to mention the constant flow of cars, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians passing by.

And if that wasn't enough, the view out of our main living area was of the Eurocamp Rep's backyard, which was full of broken items and other things just chucked there. It was akin to Steptoe's yard, if you remember that show/reference. Terrible. Awful. The whole thing reminded me of those substandard UK holiday camps from the 1980s. You know, the kind of companies that have since gone out of business due to neglect. Really not something you would expect from a coastal resort in the south of France.

When challenged with our Rep, we were told that we could not be relocated as the site was fully booked, and no effort was made to clean the areas (which should have been cleaned prior to our arrival). This goes to show the level of thought and customer service going into each booking. I could not subject my family to the ongoing horribleness of where we had been placed, therefore felt my only option was to source somewhere else to stay for the remainder of our time. Out of sheer luck (and considerable expense), I found a place about 30 miles north that had only just become available through Airbnb. I had to register with them, providing photographic and passport evidence, provisionally book and then get in touch with the owner to ensure we could secure it for the following morning onwards. This was a lot of hassle to arrange on a Monday evening. Once secured though (Amanda had to go to bed through the sheer stress of the situation), my son and I went for a drink onsite before turning in for the night. I had a beer and he had a Fanta, costing approximately £9.50....which is reminiscent of London prices and then some! When I approached our Rep in the morning to advise we were leaving, I was asked, "What did you expect? It is a coastal resort". I appreciate the Rep's hands are tied in what they can do, therefore I launched a comprehensive complaint when we returned to the UK.

Essentially, the pictures on the website were far too removed from what we were given and did not provide for any sort of nice experience. It ruined that portion of our holiday. After all, all I expect is cleanliness, things to be as described , not to be packed in like sardines and not shoved into the last few square feet of a site. Please take a moment to look at the pictures on the following page.
